Károly Bari (Hungary)

Károly Bari was born in Bükkaranyos, Hungary on October 1, 1952, representing the fifth generation of his Roma family.
In the mid-1970s he was arrested for the political tone of his poetry, and imprisoned in one of the most notorious of Hungarian prisons, szegedi Csillagba; even after his release his work was marginalized for several years.
Bari also paints and is a researcher of folklore. He has had exhibitions of his art at the Gödöllő Gallery and elsewhere.
His books of poetry are Holtak arca fölé (1970), Elfelejtett tüzek (1974), A némaság könyve (1983),A varázsló sétálni indul: Válogatott és új versek (1985), 21 vers (1992), Díszletek egy szinonimához (1994), and Csönd (2017).
His many awards include the József Attila Award (1984), Tibor Déry Award (1992), the Kossuth Prize (2001), and the Hungarian Heritage Award (2020).
