Károly Bari (Hungary)

1952

Károly Bari was born in Bükkaranyos, Hungary on October 1, 1952, representing the fifth generation of his Roma family.

After graduating from primary and high school, he studied in the College of Drama and Arts at Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen. Even as a high school student he had published a book of poetry, which received notable praise and negative criticism, but went through two reprintings. Since then he has published several further volumes of poetry and works of collected Gypsy folktales.

In the mid-1970s he was arrested for the political tone of his poetry, and imprisoned in one of the most notorious of Hungarian prisons, szegedi Csillagba; even after his release his work was marginalized for several years.

Bari also paints and is a researcher of folklore. He has had exhibitions of his art at the Gödöllő Gallery and elsewhere.

His books of poetry are Holtak arca fölé (1970), Elfelejtett tüzek (1974), A némaság könyve (1983),A varázsló sétálni indul: Válogatott és új versek (1985),  21 vers (1992), Díszletek egy szinonimához (1994), and Csönd (2017).

His many awards include the József Attila Award (1984), Tibor Déry Award (1992), the Kossuth Prize (2001), and the Hungarian Heritage Award (2020).
