Born in Moscow on February 19, 1947, Lev Rubinstein took part in the Russian literary underground while working as a librarian, a position that partly inspired his use of the index card as the equivalent of his poetic stanza. Connected with the Moscow Conceptualists, Rubinstein has been a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, and his work has been translated in several languages, particularly in English; indeed much of his early work was published in the West during the 1970s, before in appeared in Russian.
Rubinstein graduated from the Philological Faculty of Moscow State Correspondence Teacher Training College (now called the M.A. Sholokhov Moscow State Humanitarian University) before becoming a bibliographer.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s he began working on poems, whose stanzas were defined by index cards, and, along with Vsevolod Nekrasov and Dmitry Prigov, he helped to establish Moscow conceptualism.
The poet has appeared in numerous poetic festivals, art exhibitions, and musical events. In 1994 he received a grant from the DAAD organization in Berlin, and in 1999 was awarded the Andrey Bely Award in Russia. Rubinstein also has written numerous essays and writes for publications such as Itogi, Esquire and grani.ru. His collected essays were published as Zeitgeists.
